Real Couples, Real Advice. Top 5 Tips On What Matters Most When Planning Your Wedding.

Honest Wedding Advice from the Couples I’ve Photographed Over Ten Years

A couple takes a quiet moment for themselves during their wedding in San Diego.

As a San Diego and Los Angeles wedding photographer with over 10 years of experience and more than 400 weddings documented, I’ve had a front-row seat to what truly matters.

It is not always what you might suspect! Planning a wedding can feel like stepping into a world of endless advice; but the most meaningful insights don’t come from checklists or trends. They come from real couples who have actually lived the day.

These are the top 5 things real couples reflected on when looking back on their wedding day.

“I wish I let myself be more present.”

This is the one I hear most often.

Somewhere between the planning and the pressure, it’s easy to feel like you’re managing your wedding instead of living it. Timelines tighten, expectations creep in, and before you know it, the day can feel like something to execute rather than experience.

But the couples who look back most fondly aren’t the ones who had everything go perfectly. They’re the ones who allowed themselves to step inside the moment.

To pause.
To look around.
To take it in.

Your wedding day will move quickly. Faster than you expect. But presence has a way of stretching time and making even the fleeting moments feel full.

“The small moments ended up meaning the most.”

Not the centerpieces. Not the seating chart.

It was sitting on the edge of the bed with their closest friends while getting ready. It was a parent quietly adjusting a tie. It was the ten minutes alone together after the ceremony, away from everyone else, letting it all land.

These moments don’t ask for attention. They don’t announce themselves. But they’re often where the day feels the most honest.

When couples reflect back, the memories they return to are the ones that felt unfiltered, unscripted and entirely their own.

“Things will go wrong. It won’t matter.”

A late shuttle. A missing detail. A shift in the timeline. A rainy day.

At some point, something will fall out of place. And almost every couple I’ve worked with can point to a moment where things didn’t go according to plan.

But here’s what’s interesting, when they tell the story later, those moments rarely carry weight. They fade into the background, replaced by how the day felt rather than how it functioned.

There’s a kind of freedom in accepting that not everything needs to be controlled. Just like in life, the beauty of the day isn’t found in perfection, but in the way it unfolds despite it.

These moments don’t ask for attention. They don’t announce themselves. But they’re often where the day feels the most honest.

“ Wish we had kept a more relaxed timeline”

A simple timeline gives you breathing room. It allows for natural transitions between getting ready, the ceremony, portraits, and the reception. It creates space for the small, unscripted moments that become your favorite memories. A quiet laugh before walking down the aisle, the brief pause after vows, or a sunset stroll along the coast.

Your photographer is more than someone who takes pictures; they also serve a guide through your wedding day. A skilled, experienced photographer knows how to work with your timeline to maximize moments that matter and avoid unnecessary stress. With experience, they can anticipate key moments and suggest timing adjustments that make portraits and candid shots feel seamless.

At the end of the day, the best wedding advice comes from those who have lived it. Real couples remind us that presence, flexibility, and prioritizing what truly matters make the day unforgettable. From embracing quiet moments to trusting your vendors, their insights offer a roadmap for planning a wedding that feels uniquely yours. captured beautifully.

Availability & Timing – What Couples Often Ask

Is there a “best” time of year to get married in San Diego?
Honestly, one of the best parts about getting married in San Diego is that there isn’t just one perfect season. The weather stays beautiful for most of the year, which gives you a lot more flexibility than you might expect, especially if you’re dreaming of something outdoors. Some of my favorite weddings have been in February !

What is “shoulder season,” and is it worth considering?
It definitely is. Shoulder season falls right before or after peak wedding times. Think just outside of summer or around major holidays. It’s a quieter window, and that can work in your favor in a big way. I’ve shot a few New Years Eve weddings that turned into a super fun reception count-down.

Will we actually save money getting married during shoulder season?
In many cases, yes. Venues tend to have more availability, and pricing can be a bit more flexible. But beyond cost, what I see matter most is access, you’re more likely to book the vendors you really want, instead of settling because dates are limited.

Does getting married in the “off” season feel like a compromise?
Not here. San Diego kind of changes that equation. The light is still beautiful, the weather is still inviting, and your day can feel just as vibrant and full as any peak summer wedding. If anything, it can feel a little more relaxed, a little more yours.

What’s the biggest advantage of choosing a less busy time?
Options. More dates, more availability, more room to build a team you’re genuinely excited about. And when things aren’t as rushed or booked out, the whole experience, from planning to the actual day, tends to feel a lot smoother. Friday weddings are a great option if you want to have your wedding on peak season, but still take advantage of discounted rates and overall vendor availability.
