1. Schedule your San Diego Courthouse Wedding appointment online

You can start by easily registering for a marriage license and schedule your Wedding Ceremony right online HERE Don’t forget to arrive at least 20 minutes early on the day of your appointment. The San Diego Courthouse has several locations where the short ceremony can be held, and I recommend the front courtyard plaza or the small garden in the back! The plaza frames so nicely with the mid century architecture of the building, while the garden in the back has a nice lush, floral arch and keeps you comfy in some shade. Both photograph very, very well!

San Diego Courthouse Wedding FAQ

1. When is the best time for a courthouse wedding in San Diego?
San Diego courthouse weddings look beautiful year-round, but timing your ceremony can make a big difference in both lighting and crowds. Late morning through early afternoon is typically when ceremonies are scheduled, but if we’re planning portraits after, I always recommend carving out time either in the early part of the morning or closer to golden hour (sunset) for softer, more flattering light. Weekdays also tend to be quieter, which makes the whole experience feel more relaxed and intimate.

2. Do we need a photographer for a courthouse elopement?
I might be biased, but absolutely. Courthouse weddings in San Diego are often more intimate and emotional than big weddings, and having a photographer means those moments don’t get lost. From the ceremony itself to candid moments outside the courthouse and portraits along the waterfront, having someone who knows how to work quickly and naturally in that environment makes a huge difference.

3. Are there walking distance photo spots near the San Diego courthouse?
The area around the San Diego County Administration Center is full of incredible backdrops. You’ve got the harbor, palm-lined walkways, and bayfront with soft ocean light. Just a a few more blocks walk away, we can also use spots near Waterfront Park or in the Gaslamp for some cool mid-century urban portraits. The variety you get in such a small area is one of the reasons courthouse weddings here photograph so beautifully. Of course, we can always jump in my car and go to other locations!

4. What should we wear for a San Diego courthouse wedding?
There’s no strict dress code, which is part of the charm. Some couples go full wedding attire, others keep it casual or somewhere in between. I always recommend choosing something that feels like you, but also photographs well in natural light. Soft tones, breathable fabrics, and outfits you can move comfortably in. San Diego weather is usually mild, but layers can help if you’re near the water. Just keep in mind that August and September tend to be the warmest months, while May and June can often be surprisingly cooler, especially out near the waterfront. I’ve had some couples simply bring a few layers in a bag and that worked perfeclty!

5. How long should we book photography for a courthouse wedding?
Most San Diego courthouse elopements work perfectly with 1–2 hours of photography. That gives us time to document your ceremony, capture candid moments right after, and explore the surrounding area for portraits without feeling rushed. If you’re planning something a little more involved (like getting ready photos or a small celebration after) we can always extend coverage to tell the full story.
