If you asked me what my favorite top 3 spots to take couples photos in San Diego, I'd definitely put Balboa Park among those. After 12+ years as a full-time wedding photographer here, I still get a little giddy whenever I set up a wedding or engagement shoot in Balboa Park.
Balboa Park engagement photos and wedding portraits are some of my favorite work, and not only because the architecture is gorgeous (it is). It's that the park hands you variety. Within a few minutes' walk you have Spanish Colonial arches, a Craftsman mansion, a 1915 lath house full of ferns, and a giant outdoor organ. That means one location can give you a full gallery that looks like it came from five different places.
I'm a documentary-style San Diego wedding photographer, and I work mostly with couples who say, "we're really not comfortable in front of a camera." Good. Neither is anyone, really. Balboa Park helps because it gives you something to do: wander, laugh, get lost in a garden. The photos happen in between. Here are my favorite spots in the park.
Alcazar Garden: where I start almost every session
I like to begin at the Alcazar Garden because it's a gentle warm-up. It's enclosed, it's quiet in the morning, and the formal hedges, tiled fountains and symmetrical paths give couples a sense of direction. Nobody has to wonder where to stand.
My favorite thing here is to let the couple walk the garden paths while I stay back with a longer lens. You get real laughter and little glances instead of stiff poses. Then I'll bring them in for a few structured portraits by the fountain, so you get the best of both: candid and composed.
If you're planning Balboa Park wedding photos, it’s best to go early. Soft morning light bounces off the garden's pale walls and flatters everyone, and you'll have the place nearly to yourselves. Otherwise sunset on weekdays works well too! Weekends are truly best in the morning time.
Marston House: Craftsman charm and a very San Diego backdrop
The Marston House is the spot I recommend when couples tell me they want something that feels timeless rather than touristy. The historic Craftsman architecture and the garden grounds around it give you warm wood tones, deep porches and greenery that photographs beautifully, especially on film.
This is where I lean into the documentary side of my work. I'll ask a couple to sit on the steps, share a joke, or just take a slow walk along the grounds, and I'll shoot from a distance while they forget about me. The best frames here are usually the unplanned ones: a hand adjusting a collar, a forehead touch, a shared look when they think I'm not paying attention.
It's a favorite for engagement sessions, anniversary photos and wedding portraits when you want a quieter, more intimate feel than the park's busier central stretch. Check ahead on access and any permit requirements before you plan around it, since those can change.
The Spreckels Organ Pavilion: big, grand and surprisingly intimate
I know, I know. An outdoor organ pavilion doesn't sound romantic until you stand in front of it. The sweeping curved colonnade and the open stage make a dramatic frame, and the scale is exactly what camera-shy couples need. When you're small in a big, beautiful space, you stop feeling watched.
I love shooting wide here: two people walking toward the pavilion, a dance in the open space (no choreography, I promise, just a slow sway and a laugh), or a quiet moment on the benches with the whole structure behind them. It's a great place for wedding portraits that feel cinematic and naturally framed by the organ.
One tip: the organ hosts public concerts, so the pavilion can be busy at times. If you want it to yourselves, plan a weekday or an early start, and I'll work around anyone who wanders through. Sometimes the strangers in the background make the photo better.
The Botanical Building and Lily Pond: my "golden hour" cheat code
I’ve revisited the Botanical Building for couples photos lately and I’ve come to embrace it. You’ll have to work around the inevitable tourists that wonder in and out of the building, but it is worth it!
The greenery inside and the pond outside give you two totally different looks in one stop. I'll often start with a few wide shots from across the water, then move closer for tighter, quieter frames while the couple wanders along the edge.
This is also one of my favorite places to shoot film. The light, the foliage and the skin tones come out so warm and organic that the images feel like they've always existed. If you're searching for a San Diego wedding photographer who shoots both film and digital, this spot is where you'll see why I love both.
The secret spot: Palm Canyon
Most people walk right past it, which is exactly why I love it. Palm Canyon is a shaded, hushed corner of Balboa Park where tall palms and filtered light make you feel like you've stepped out of the city entirely. No crowds, no tour groups, no one asking if they can squeeze past.
With nobody watching, shoulders drop and people relax. I'll let a couple walk the path, stop when they want to, and talk about whatever they'd talk about anyway. Those are the frames that often end up being the favorites.
It's perfect for a San Diego engagement session if you want something moodier and more private than the park's famous postcards, and it works beautifully for the quiet portrait moments of a wedding day too. I'll still keep the exact route to myself, but that's what a consult is for.
Planning your Balboa Park session
A few things I tell every couple: go early or on a weekday, wear something you can actually walk and laugh in, and don't worry about knowing what to do with your hands. That's my job. I'll give you just enough direction to feel guided, and then I'll get out of the way so the moment can feel like yours.
