La Valencia Hotel Wedding in La Jolla | Kiana and Zak

Bride and groom sit together and smile while holding champagne glasses after their wedding ceremony at La Valencia in La Jolla.

There's a reason La Valencia has been the backdrop for La Jolla love stories for nearly a century. The pink stucco walls, the sweeping ocean views, and that old-world Mediterranean charm make it one of the most romantic wedding venues in San Diego. When Kiana and Zak chose "The Pink Lady" for their wedding day, I knew I was in for something timeless.

As one of San Diego's leading film wedding photographers, I was especially excited to shoot this wedding on both film and digital. La Valencia's warm, vintage architecture is practically made for film! I mean.. that soft grain and rich tonality of film pair beautifully with the hotel's old Hollywood glamour, while digital gives me the flexibility to capture every candid moment throughout the day without missing a beat.

A La Jolla Wedding with Ocean Views and Old Hollywood Glamour

La Valencia Hotel sits perched above the cliffs of La Jolla Cove, and the venue's mix of historic architecture and panoramic Pacific views gives every wedding here a built-in sense of drama and romance. For Kiana and Zak, the day started with soft, muted light pouring through the windows of their getting-ready suite, and it only got better from there.

We shot the ceremony on La Valencia's iconic terrace, where the ocean stretches out behind the altar and La Jolla's coastline curves into the horizon. Few venues in San Diego offer a ceremony backdrop this striking without a single filter needed.

Candid Moments Over Posed Perfection

Anyone who's worked with me before knows my approach: minimal posing, maximum connection. Kiana and Zak, like most of mycouples, admitted early on that they weren't exactly comfortable in front of a camera. So I kept things light, kept them moving, and let the real moments happen in between the "official" shots. The laughs during their first look, the champagne toast that followed, the unposed grin Zak couldn't hide when he saw Kiana for the first time, those are the images that end up meaning the most.

Why I love to Shoot Film and Digital for San Diego Weddings

For Kiana and Zak's day, I brought both a digital and a film camera into every key moment. The ceremony, the wedding party photos in the park, and quiet in between moments during the reception. As one of the leading film wedding photographers in San Diego, I believe film brings a timeless, emotive quality that digital alone can't replicate. What is unique about our film photography package is that we actually send you prints! Yep, you get to open up a beautifully packaged box of memories you can hold. Check out the package I prepared for them HERE

Shooting a hybrid film-and-digital wedding gives couples like Kiana and Zak the best of both worlds : the artistry and warmth of film alongside the coverage and reliability of digital.

Planning a Wedding at La Valencia Hotel in La Jolla?

If you're considering La Valencia Hotel for your own La Jolla wedding, here's what we'd tell every couple:

  • Book your ceremony time around sunset if ocean-view portraits are a priority — the light on the cliffs is unbeatable in the last hour before dusk.

  • Lean into the venue's natural romance. La Valencia doesn't need much extra styling — the architecture and views do a lot of the work.

  • Give yourself time for a coastal portrait session. Even if a quick 20 minutes near La Jolla Cove adds a completely different visual layer to your gallery.

As a San Diego wedding photographer with years of experience shooting La Jolla venues on both film and digital, we know how to work with the light, the location, and , most importantly, camera-shy couples, to create a gallery that actually feels like you.
